Now, for the Hidden Wisdom
Proverbs was mundane. How about some real woo woo?
Remember when I wrote that Wisdom is all around us, shouting at us in the marketplace? Remember when I wrote that you didn't need to seek an Ascended Master in some remote temple in order to receive Wisdom?
I lied.
Sort of. Yes, a great deal of Wisdom is obvious to the humble and observant. There is even even a class of memes riffing on the subject:
Jesus himself remarked on the phenomenon.
Mat 11:25 At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes.
But the Bible does also contain esoteric Wisdom, received by a guru who went up on a mountain and conversed with The Creator Himself. Tales abound how this guru had a glowing aura, how he was able to perform miracles far beyond the mere levitation promised by the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Program.
Odds are good that you have the words of this guru in your home. Yes, some of his messages are hidden in a disorganized mess mixed in with boring geneologies, even more boring descriptions of animal sacrifices, and deeply disturbing Bronze Age brutality. But decoding his messages is a straightforward process for the diligent, no great intellect needed. There is no deep numerology or secret passwords. You just need to wade through the disorganized mess and stop and think when you come across passages which are disturbing to the modern mindset.
I am referring, of course, to the Law of Moses. Solomon refers to it indirectly:
Pro 1:7 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
For Solomon's audience, this obviously referred to the Law of Moses. If you fear God, you want to obey His laws. Duh!
And here's the ironic bit: even if you don't fear God, you can still get some Wisdom from studying his Laws. Take this into account all ye conspiracy theorists who fret about Joos hiding behind The Curtain. You can get some Joo Powers too; just study the Law of Moses.
Case in point: Robert Heinlein was a naughty nudist apostate with some really disturbing ideas on sex. But he also wrote some cool stories with some really interesting ideas: "Coventry", Starship Troopers, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. I became an anarcho-capitalist as a result of the last work, well before even hearing the word "libertarian." Only later did I come across the Friedmans, Murray Rothbard, Ayn Rand, etc.
These days I pick fights with the followers of Rothbard: the axioms of Austrian Economics are incredibly crude approximations of human psychology; extrapolating too far from such a weak base leads to silliness. I also pick fights with the followers of Rand: good government is a Public Good; therefore, a free society requires large quantities of altruism. It also takes mass quantities of altruism to raise a child.
But I still retain many of the libertarian leanings I picked up from reading C.S. Lewis and Robert Heinlein when young. (Heinlein considered the frontier crucial to the American Way. Ergo, the Trumpy policies of closing the borders, buying Greenland, and building spaceships to go to Mars are much more in line with Heinlein's vision than the cosmopolitan libertarianism of Reason magazine.) Both Lewis and Heinlein embedded Biblical messages in their works including the overlooked and disturbing bits, the parts skipped over by modern milquetoast Mainline Protestant pastors.
Heinlein dwelt on the disturbing bits because he had been raised to become a Fundamentalist preacher, but then discovered Darwin and became an apostate. His works can be seen as arguments with God, with lots of whataboutism. As a result, a fair amount of Divine Wisdom leaks out, Wisdom not revealed from pulpits of Churches which breeze by or skip over certain passages entirely.
We can do better by studying these disturbing passages from a Christian perspective -- especially if we keep a historical context in mind. The Law of Moses and the Book of Judges give us a rare example of a society resembling anarcho-capitalism. Unlike Murray Rothbard's example of early Medieval Ireland or David Friedman's example of Medieval Iceland, the Biblical example took place on a continent, in between surrounding empires.
The system set up by Moses was anarchic. There were no police or professional standing armies. The closest thing to bureaucrats were the Levites, and their jobs were limited to ceremony, archives, and enforcing some public health regulations.
But the system was not libertarian. If you wanted to engage in gay sex, witchcraft, or idol worship, the Holy Land was a very bad place to be.
However, for the average man, the Law of Moses offered more freedom than pure libertarianism. Pure libertarianism can lead to rent-seeking and extreme concentrations of wealth. Extreme wealth gaps become power relations. The Law of Moses is anarcho-populist, not libertarian.
OK, the Bronze Age is over and the West is not the Holy Land. So I am not suggesting that we enforce the full Law of Moses here in the United States (or similar nations). Christians are tasked to set examples within the nations, vs. run an ideal nation. What I am saying as that Christians should study this example carefully and sympathetically. There is Wisdom for the Christian Ages, including our own. A study of the Law of Moses reveals:
Answers to Marx's objections to capitalism. How to prevent the race to the bottom in a market economy.
How to prevent feudalism. (So much for celebrating hierarchy and inherited aristocracy.)
A no-bureaucracy approach to welfare. How to take care of the poor without encouraging poverty-inducing behaviors.
Criminal justice reform, including how to make Black lives matter without unleashing criminality.
Some radical civil liberties protections.
Solutions for many plagues, both ancient and modern.
How we could have stopped the Counter Culture Revolution of the 1960s and maybe even won the Vietnam War.
I'll address most of these in future posts. For now let's look at an easy one. Conservative Christians, prepare for a "Wow! I could have had a V8!" moment.
Thwarting the Aquarian Age
Let's review the 1960s, a decade that began full of hope, American Dream, and hubris, and ended with commie bombings, mass protests, and the younger generation idealistically indulging in Hedonism Extra Strength and rejecting American tradition. And as a result, we lost the Vietnam War despite winning most of the battles. Also, the Mainline Protestant denominations, which once dominated American society, dumbed themselves down in order to be Relevant.
How did this happen? Some of what happened was the culmination of commies working the system starting in the 1930s. Some of the blame lies with the Greatest Generation who were a bit too shell shocked to be ideal parents. Some of the blame lies with the country not building enough school classrooms to accommodate the Boomers. Some of the blame lies with leaded gasoline. But the truly big factor was overlooking a very relevant bit of Biblical Wisdom:
Deu 20:1 'When thou goest out to battle against thine enemy, and hast seen horse and chariot—a people more numerous than thou—thou art not afraid of them, for Jehovah thy God is with thee, who is bringing thee up out of the land of Egypt;

Deu 20:8 'And the authorities have added to speak unto the people, and said, Who is the man that is afraid and tender of heart? —let him go and turn back to his house, and the heart of his brethren doth not melt like his heart;
The United States forced the fearful onto the battlefields in Vietnam. The fear was poison, reducing our combat effectiveness. The fear came home and caused chaos and our eventual abandonment of South Vietnam -- which fell to a conventional invasion, not the Viet Cong.
I snipped the quote above. The complete passage has even more Wisdom:
Deu 20:1 'When thou goest out to battle against thine enemy, and hast seen horse and chariot—a people more numerous than thou—thou art not afraid of them, for Jehovah thy God is with thee, who is bringing thee up out of the land of Egypt;

Deu 20:4 for Jehovah your God is He who is going with you, to fight for you with your enemies—to save you.
Deu 20:5 'And the authorities have spoken unto the people, saying, Who is the man that hath built a new house, and hath not dedicated it? —let him go and turn back to his house, lest he die in battle, and another man dedicate it.
Deu 20:6 'And who is the man that hath planted a vineyard, and hath not made it common? —let him go and turn back to his house, lest he die in battle, and another man make it common.
Deu 20:7 'And who is the man that hath betrothed a woman, and hath not taken her? —let him go and turn back to his house, lest he die in battle, and another man take her.
Deu 20:8 'And the authorities have added to speak unto the people, and said, Who is the man that is afraid and tender of heart? —let him go and turn back to his house, and the heart of his brethren doth not melt like his heart;
The Law of Moses also provided a military deferral to men who had just built a house, planted a vineyard, or betrothed a wife. The last exemption was for an entire year:
Deu 24:5 'When a man taketh a new wife, he doth not go out into the host, and one doth not pass over unto him for anything; free he is at his own house one year, and hath rejoiced his wife whom he hath taken.
I think it's safe to say that had we granted young people a year long draft deferral for getting married, that it would have put quite a damper on the Free Love movement. Yes, there was still the Pill, and yes there would have been many a lonely wife. But there was also the prospect of a war hardened jealous husband returning from home to put a damper on the hanky-panky.
Notice the other two deferrals: building a home or planting a vineyard. Both are examples of making a long term investment in the homeland. All very traditional and patriotic.
Instead, the United States granted draft deferrals for those in college: a haven for tradition-questioning Socrates wanna-bes and outright Marxists. Those most dedicated to staying out of Vietnam stayed in college through graduate school and become the leftist professors who came to dominate academia.
I have zero recollection of any preacher citing the scriptures above, either during the 60s or later. It took a well-versed apostate to attempt to get the message out:
Christians reading this should be having a "Wow! I could have had a V8!" moment. I'll give an illustration on why Christians overlooked the obvious in the next post in this series.
But for today, let's look at how we on the Populist Right can apply the Wisdom of Deuteronomy 20:8 today. The Populist Right has long had a serious fearwhiners in the ranks problem. For a recent example see this post from

Don't take advantage of a Left stunned by Trump's tsunami of chaos. Look within instead...

Also, Jews own a lot of important media properties. Meanwhile, the Woketard Left has discovered that Jews are Whiter than Palestinians, and so we have airhead bitches donning kaffiyehs and cheering Hamas after they committed some gruesome atrocities. This is a political opportunity of extraordinary magnitude.
Yes, the Jewish vote and donor base has historically been pretty far left-leaning for the past century. But anyone who thinks that Jews are a united front politically needs to meet more actual Jews. Jews argue with each other. They have been arguing for centuries. The Talmud is a record of centuries of argument. Anyone who does a selective reading of the Talmud can come to any desired conclusion about Jewish thought. The Gospels record Jews arguing fine points of Law in Jesus' day.

Wake up people! Ayn Rand had more in common with Vitalists than Bolsheviks. Her calls to restore the pre-Christian Greek Sense of Life are incredibly close to Neoliberal Feudalism's Egalitarian Ratchet Effect theory of communism being the outgrowth of Christianity.

It's worth noting that the Bible makes it clear that there is also "esoteric wisdom" that *did not get written down.* Modern-day "sola scriptura" Protestants ignore this simple fact at their own peril.
Look at Matthew 13:11, (and the parallel passages in Mark 4 and Luke 8,) where Jesus tells his disciples that his oblique manner of teaching is "Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given." Likewise, 1 Corinthians 4: 1 calls the Church "the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God."
That word "mysteries" is an interesting one. We live in a time when, like the people of Babel, our language has been confounded. To modern ears, that sounds like "thing that is difficult to understand," or perhaps "fiction about a detective solving a case." But that is not what it meant to Jesus and his followers!
The Greek word μυστήριον (mustérion) used here has a very specific meaning: the secret inner-circle teachings of a religion that were not shared with the public, but only with believers who had undergone some rite of initiation. Writings from cultures that had mystery religions tend to contain oblique references to the secret teachings and talk around them in interesting ways, and we see this in the New Testament, with Jesus speaking in parables and cloaking deeper meanings in what appear to be straightforward teaching.
(For example, no matter how many times we see Old Testament prophets speak of mountains and temples as symbolically equivalent to one another, and despite knowing that the guy who built the original temple was famous for being The Wisest Man Ever, most people imagine the Sermon on the Mount — which concludes with Jesus telling people that those who follow these teachings will be likened unto a wise man who built a house upon a rock — as taking place outdoors on some random hillside somewhere.)
There are also some very abrupt and deliberate breaks in Luke's narrative. In Luke chapter 24, after spending a whole book recording Jesus' teachings in great detail, we find the curious case of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, where Christ meets them and "beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself." We get their reaction to his teaching, but not a word of what he actually said. And shortly afterwards in the Book of Acts, which identifies itself as a sequel to the Gospel of Luke, Luke opens with a brief introduction, and then glosses over what came next: Jesus spends forty days "speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God." He says *nothing whatsoever* about what was taught in the next forty days.
Why? The answer is almost certainly "because Luke was an initiate of the Mysteries, and the stuff Jesus was talking about in these cases was the Mysteries, and Luke understood that they were not to be written down and shared with the public, only alluded to in oblique ways, so that other initiates would notice there's Mysteries stuff going on here while people who don't 'have eyes to see and ears to hear' would never even realize there's anything worth seeing."
