I love the term green RINO! A manned mission to Mars is a dumb idea because it would expose the colonists to massive amounts of radiation at current travel times. There are plenty of deserts on earth that can be terraformed and the moon is much closer than Mars. Still, I love the world building, universe spanning science fiction of Frank Herbert. Dune was my original mind blowing science fiction and fantasy book. I also loved The Santaroga Barrier.

I suppose I fall in the Christian luddite category. I am much more concerned with what happens after I leave this world than going to other worlds, for one thing.

Being someone born in the middle of the 1950's, I feel life was better before the internet age took off around the turn of the millennium. Before that, life was less stressful, there was common courtesy and a more polite society, and life was just better.

Reality TV and social media has led to being obnoxious as acceptable. Society is divided. The government is working for big corporations instead of the citizens. I could go on, but if you are older you know what I mean.

I'm pretty sure that everyone wants a clean environment, but we have too many grifters and power grabbers using climate alarmism. Ethanol, carbon credits, "green" energy, too many things are just ways to lower our standard of living so that certain people can get money from the government, while doing absolutely nothing for helping the environment. It's a scam.

Yes, we had a pollution problem which needed to be cleaned up, and it was done. However back then, we didn't have plastic in wide use, bottles were returned and cans collected, and everything was biodegradable. I suppose it would be too much trouble and expense to go back to the old packaging and reduce the use of plastic to only the essential. No, instead of doing what needs to be done, they tell us we have to lower our standard of living. It's a scam.

I must comment on the gun issue. Yes, you must be aware of what is behind what you are shooting at, but if someone breaks into your home and is attacking you, you should be able to defend yourself. The second amendment is important, because we have many examples of a disarmed population under tyranny. It is naive to think that society would be better if only the government and the criminals have the guns.

Muskets were the weapons in common use in that time. Horses were the mode of transportation. I can make a case for going back to horses, for the environment of course, but that's not going to happen. You can't make the case for comparing regular life in the late 18th century to today unless you want to go all the way.

Global elites are the biggest problem we face. They are what is standing in the way of a sane environmental policy, which actually achieves results without making us serfs.

Bad environmentalism is a big problem. The solution is to replace it with good environmentalism. Look for the Green RINOs in my archive for more posts on the subject.

Fantastic essay. Regarding the microwave problem. High voltage DC lines descending from an orbital ring.

A cable from a geosynchronous satellite would be mighty long.

Doesn’t have to be in a geostationary orbit. An active structure like an orbital ring could be in low earth orbit.

Are you being silly? You cannot connect to a line from a satellite. Hypersonic velocity with respect to ground.

Riding a hypersonic stream of iron slugs that would atomise anything they accidentally touched is not for the faint hearted. Or the uninsured 😂. Personally, I think a charged particle beam would be a better option. Easier to deflect magnetically, and if the aiming fails it would decohere into something less dangerous than a sabot round.

You are making fast breeder reactors look incredibly safe!

Not a satellite. An orbital ring. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orbital_ring
